Newcastle should sign Dennis – Whelan

Former Leeds striker, Noel Whelan, has urged Newcastle to seize the chance to sign Nigerian forward, Emmanuel Dennis, this summer.

The pundit advised the English side to make the most of Watford’s relegation by signing the forward as soon as possible, while speaking to Football Insider. He also expressed his surprise that Everton exited the race to sign the 25-year-old.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Dennis.

Watford sporting director, Cristiano Giaretta, confirmed the Nigeria international was looking to leave Vicarage Road, but will do so only if an “acceptable offer” arrives – with the Hornets reportedly set to hold out for £20-30m.

PUNCH Sports Extra reported last week that Everton were no longer interested in making a move for Dennis, despite earlier links to the striker.

Whelan backed the former Club Brugge man to “have an immediate impact” if he joined the Magpies this summer.

“He was the standout for Watford in a very poor season,” he told Football Insider.

“I’m surprised to see Everton pulling out of the race given what a good performer he was.

“Newcastle have got their transfer business spot on so far. They’re going to these sorts of teams and taking the best talent – and I’m sure that Dennis would have a similar effect.

“He scores goals, he creates goals – and that can only be good for the whole team.

“They’re looking at players who can excite the fans and have an immediate impact – and Dennis is certainly one of them.”

Dennis notched 10 goals and six assists in 33 league games for Watford last season. He remains under contract until June 2026.
