My grandma’s songs inspire me— Christy Essien-Igbokwe’s granddaughter

Christiana Igbokwe, a child artiste and the granddaughter of the late singer, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, has said she gets inspiration from her grandmother’s songs and she wishes to be greater than Michael Jackson.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, she said, “The challenges I face border on how to manage my music career and school work. I try to put my education first. Another challenge is collaborating with some people who think I am too young to do music. I always remind them that Michael Jackson started singing at the age five and he went on to become the king of pop. I believe one day, I will be greater than Micheal Jackson.”

On how she combines her music career with academics, she said, “It is easy to do the things that one loves. I attend to my academics first before music and I practice on my piano after I have done my homework.  Besides, I attend music school only on weekends. It takes a lot of hard-work, discipline and dedication to combine both.

“Sometimes, I usually have interviews scheduled during school hours. However, my parents try to reschedule them to weekends.”

On the notable moments of her career, she said, “They include the launch of my first Extended Play album and doing a remake of my grandma’s hit song, Seun Rere.

“I listen to my grandma’s songs a lot and they speak to me. I am inspired by her works because they encourage children to read the Bible and be hard-working. I have also learnt from stories I heard about her on how to love and help people.

“Right now, I am working on my first album and my dad will be producing most of the songs on it.”
